MOLECULAR MODELING OF NANOPOROUS MATERIALS FOR ENERGY AND MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

  ''We have witnessed the quick growth of research on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in the last decade. MOFs are considered as a relatively new group of nanoporous materials that have several outstanding properties such as low densities, large surface areas and high porosities which make them promising materials for a large variety of applications. MOFs have been used for gas storage, gas separation, sensing, catalysis, drug storage and delivery. The large variety in topologies and chemical functionalities of MOFs offer a large number of MOF materials that can exhibit extraordinary performances compared to traditional materials. Considering the large number of existing materials, it is not practically possible to test every single MOF material for a target application using purely experimental manners. My research group uses molecular simulation techniques to perform large-scale screening of MOFs and identification of the best performing materials for a desired application. In my talk, I will show our recent results on molecular modeling of MOFs for gas storage, gas separation, adsorbent and membrane design, and for drug storage and drug delivery. I will also discuss the relations between structural properties of MOFs and their performance.

Dr. Keskin Avcı graduated from Chemical Engineering Department of Bogazici University in 2004 and completed her MSc degreeived 'Sigma Xi Best Dissertation Award' from the Scientific Research Society and 'Outstanding PhD Thesis' from GaTech. She has been working as a full-time faculty in Chemical and Biological e at the same department in 2006. She received her PhD degree from the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech) in USA in 2009. Her thesis was on atomically-detailed modeling of nanoporous materials for gas separation applications and recEngineering department of Koc University since 2010. Her current research is in the area of atomically-detailed modeling of new-generation nanoporous materials for energy and biomedical applications. Her research group has produced 69 journal articles, all published in international, peer-reviewed journals and cited more than 3,000 times. She received 2011 L'Oreal Turkey Women in Science Award, 2012 Outstanding Young Scientist Award-Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA), 2013 Young Investigator Incentive Award-TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), 2013 Koc University Outstanding Faculty Award, 2014 Young Scientist Award (BAGEP)-The Science Academy, 2014 Scientist of the Year-Science Heroes Association, 2015 Prof. Dr. Mustafa N. Parlar Foundation Research Incentive Award, 2016 FABED Outstanding Achievement Award. She was recently elected as American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Senior Member and American Nano Society member''.
