2017 Aptullah Kuran Memorial Lecture will be given by Cemal Kafadar (Vehbi Koç Professor of Turkish Studies, Harvard University) at Rectorate Conference Hall on April 5, 17.00pm.
Cemal Kafadar received his Ph.D. from McGill University's Institute of Islamic Studies in 1987. He taught at Princeton University's Near Eastern Studies Department between 1987 and 1989, before transferring to Harvard University. Since 1990, Dr. Kafadar has been a member of the Department of History and of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, and since 1997, he has held the Vehbi Koç Chair of Turkish Studies at Harvard. He was the director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies between 1999 and 2004, and during the 2009–10 academic year. He has been a visiting professor at Boğaziçi University, at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, and at Koç University. He is co-editor of the Journal of Turkish Studies, and an editor of the Historians of the Ottoman Empire. Among his honors are the Mehmet Fuat Köprülü Award for the best book in Turkish Studies (1996), and Turkey′s Presidential Grand Award in Culture and Arts (2010). The conference will be in English.
