The Syria Crisis: How it developed, where it is going?

The uprising in Syria has passed its third anniversary.  Enough time has passed to attempt to answer some pertinent questions: Why did the uprising break out to begin with? What does it have in common with the other Arab uprisings? Why did it not follow the path set by the Egyptian uprising, but instead descend into civil war? Who are the opposition? How did the uprising evolve, and what future direction might it take? What have been the effects of the uprising on global and international affairs? Is there an American strategy toward the Syria crisis? Is there a way out?  This lecture will try to answer these and other questions about the uprising.  It will be presented by James L. Gelvin, Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a leading expert on Syria and the Arab uprisings.  Professor Gelvin's latest book is The Arab Uprisings: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2012).  He is co-editor of Global Muslims in the Age of Steam and Print, 1850-1930 (University of California Press, 2013).
