Climate Aware Urban Design Lecture

Dr. Müge Kömürcü and Dr. Jonah Sussking from MIT will be lecturing openly on ""Climate Aware Urban Design"" at our department in Prof. Dr. Cem Avcı's class on Monday October 14th at 10.00-11.00 hrs. The lecture is part of the MISTI Global Seed Funds (GSF) funding for the project led by Prof. Cem Avcı and Dr. Emre Çamlıbel from our university. As the frequency and intensity of rainfall events continue to increase due to climate change, stormwater management is an especially challenging imperative for developing megacities such as Istanbul, Turkey. This project brings together a transdisciplinary team of civil engineers, urban designers, and climate scientists from MIT and Boğaziçi University to study this issue in detail.All students and faculty are invited.
Our team will; 1) collect data related to historical climate trends in order to produce high-resolution projections, with a focus on precipitation rates, 2) help evaluate the future impacts of changes in the frequency, intensity and duration of storm events on Istanbul's existing drainage system, 3) guide the design of more resilient infrastructure—including large-scale stormwater wetlands.
