Dr. Markus Dressler is currently Heisenberg scholar at the Religious Studies Department of Leipzig University. He previously taught at universities in the U.S., Turkey, Germany, and Switzerland and published extensively on the Alevis, religion and politics in Turkey, as well as secularism. Publications include Writing Religion: The Making of Turkish Alevi Islam (2013; turk. transl. Türk Aleviliğinin İnşası: Oryantalizm, Tarihçilik, Milliyetçilik ve Din Yazımı, 2016), Die alevitische Religion: Traditionslinien und Neubestimmungen (2002), as well as co-edited volumes on Islamicate Secularities in Past and Present (Historical Social Research 44.3, 2019), Secularism and Religion-Making (2011), and Sufis in Western Society: Global Networking and Locality (2009).
