About The Seminar:

Quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) is a recently developed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique which gained broad interest during the last decade. It allows quantification of local susceptibility differences in tissue, e.g. brain. The voxel intensity in QSM is linearly proportional to the underlying tissue apparent magnetic susceptibility, such as iron, and calcium (Figure 1). First half of my talk will include topics from my PhD work, covering QSM processing pipeline and its applications in the brain. Later, I will continue with my on-going postdoctoral projects, i.e. multi-modal acquisitions including measures of fMRI and EEG data during sleep and wakefulness. It is well known that fMRI signal variations covary, in part, with fluctuations in physiological signals. During drowsiness and light-sleep we observed strong correlations between low frequency EEG power, fMRI signal, and respiratory and cardiac related signals (Figure 2). Since variations in systemic physiology are likely to occur during various conditions, such as during pain or cognitive stimuli, a careful interpretation of brain connectivity analyses should take this contribution into account.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Özbay received her B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering from Boğaziçi University in 2009. Following her undergraduate, she completed her M.Sc. in Computational Science and Engineering at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Munich; and received her Ph.D. from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. During her PhD, she gained expertise in the study of brain anatomy and function with novel MRI techniques. In 2017, she joined the Advanced MRI Section of the Laboratory of Functional and Molecular Imaging (NIH, Bethesda, USA) to broaden her experience in multi-modal acquisitions during sleep and wakefulness, which included measures of behavioral, physiological, fMRI and EEG data.
