Johann Strauss is a graduate of Munich University. He did his PhD on a 17th Century Ottoman historian, İsazade. He taught at the universities of Munich, Birmingham (UK) and Freiburg (Germany) and spent two years as a researcher in Istanbul (1988-1989). From 1997 to 2018, he was associate professor at the Turkish Department of the University of Strasbourg (France). His research interests include the history of printing and publishing, translations from Western languages into Ottoman Turkish, Ottoman intellectual history, and cultural and linguistic contacts between the various communities of the Ottoman Empire.
