Developing an Online Course using Community of Inquiry (CoI) Model for Teachers

Community of inquiry (CoI) has been highly recognized as a design framework for online learning. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of the CoI framework in asynchronous courses. We know little about how design elements of CoI affect learners' outcomes in online courses. Considering these gaps, in this study, how we designed an asynchronous online course and relevant activities using the dimensions of CoI is described. The findings from teacher interviews and survey data showed that the activities (hands-on assignments, collaborative work, instructor's availability, and discussions) enhanced teachers' satisfaction and facilitated their learning. The findings suggest that CoI in an online graduate-level course for in-service teachers can support their professional development. Design recommendations for effective learning in asynchronous courses are also offered.

Selçuk Doğan is an assistant professor in Elementary and Special Education at Georgia Southern University. His research interests are teachers' professional development, online learning, professional learning communities, instructional design, learning analytics, secondary analysis of large-scale and big data, multilevel structural equation modeling (SEM), propensity score analysis, and social network analysis.
